Welche Bedeutung gewannen die Propaganda der »Volksgemeinschaft« und die massenhafte Bereitschaft zum Mitmachen in der NS-Diktatur für die Gesellschaftsgeschichte Deutschlands im 20. Jahrhundert?Der Band bietet eine aktuelle Bilanz der seit über zehn Jahren kontrovers geführten Debatte über die Bedeutung der »Volksgemeinschaft« als zentrales Propagandakonzept und prägende Denkfigur nationalsozialistischer Herrschaft. In rund 30 Beiträgen akzentuieren nationale und internationale Experten Sichtweisen auf dieses Untersuchungsfeld, diskutieren Praktiken des Mitmachens in der Diktatur und die Mechanismen nationalsozialistischer Herrschaftsstabilisierung. Indem das Verhalten breiter Bevölkerungsgruppen in den Blickpunkt rückt, wird die lange Zeit in der Forschung vertretene Konzentration auf eine Täter-Opfer-Perspektive überwunden und ein wichtiger Beitrag zur Gesellschafts- und Kulturgeschichte Deutschlands während der NS-Zeit geleistet.

The role of music during the German occupation of Norway (1940-45) proves to be an exceptional case for cultural opposition in a dictatorship. Few famous musicians, some local celebrities and innumerous hardly known activists preferred artistic instead of militant means to demonstrate reluctance, spread information, contradict the legitimacy of the German occupants and raise the moral strength of fellow countrymen in Norway and abroad, while risking to be caught, incarcerated and driven into exile. The indispensable advantage was the popular belief of art as an apolitical matter so that music even could reach into fields that would have been inaccessible to open political agitation. Based on considerable findings in public archives and private collections, this book discusses music in concentration camps in Norway and the fate of Jewish musicians, portrays choirs, military ensembles, orchestral and church music in Norway. It further analyzes Harald Sæverud's 5th symphony and Moses Pergament's choir symphony Den judiska sången, illustrates the exile of musicians in Stockholm and discusses resistance music in historic media such as the Errol Flynn-movie Edge of Darkness (1943), recapitulated by a model for music as resistance.

Notions of the 'Nordic' have always been an issue in Norway's national identity building, both before and after it became a sovereign state in 1905. Accordingly, Norwegian music has expressed a sense of ambivalence towards being conceived as 'Nordic' from the outside: A strong sense of 'Norwegianness' (forged during the heroic age of cultural nation-building in the 19th century) was challenged by the advent of new, nationalistic currents in the 1930s, which used notions of the Nordic as a political weapon. This book shows how music expresses affirmation and ambivalence towards the 'Nordic' as an ingredient of Norwegian national identity across musical genres. Further, it explores the contingencies of national music and the dramatic changes in 20th-century European political history. At the same time, it sheds new light on the difference between musical nationalism and national music. Die versammelten Aufsätze entfalten ein breites und facettenreiches Panorama, betreten mitunter genuines Forschungsneuland und eröffnen durch ihren Fallstudiencharakter zahlreiche Ansätze für künftige Untersuchungen, auch weit über die deutsch-norwegischen Musikbeziehungen hinaus. Zudem lenken sie den Blick auf die noch zu wenig aus vergleichender Perspektive betrachteten internationalen Musikbeziehungen im 20. Jahrhundert und insbesondere das Musikleben unter deutscher Besatzung, die erst allmählich größere Beachtung finden.
